Nexis by A.L. Davroe
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Rating: 4.2 stars.
So, I actually had the honour of meeting A.L. Davroe a few weeks ago at the end of January. She's such an awesome person, and she answered a ton of questions I had about writing as a career and what to do for college in a few years. I've had NEXIS on my TBR shelf for a while now, but meeting her made me want to read it about 16 times more. So, I put it on hold and got it about two weeks later.
There's something about meeting an author that makes you feel obligated to love their book. Or, at least, that's how I kind of feel about it. So when I met A.L., I felt like I needed to love NEXIS, because I had met her and knew a little about her as a person. I felt the same way when I met Dawn Metcalf a few years ago with Luminous, and the Twixt series. I know that this isn't exactly the best way to feel: I wouldn't want to force anyone to read my book just because they got to meet me. I've tried to break that habit, but it's not like I get to meet a lot of authors. It's a rare experience for me, especially when it's an author I can totally relate to. (We both started writing the same way...)
Okay, onto the book review. This book actually took a lot to get into. I wasn't a fan of the whole first part, because to me, it just seemed like a lot of complaining from Ellani because she was a Natural and everyone else was all fancy. (Can I just say: the Capitol from the Hunger Games?) But as it got further in: taking a break for Ellani to mope some more about (view spoiler) , it got a lot more interesting.
I LOVE the design for Nexis (the game, not the book. Though the book was awesome, but that's not my point). It was just so well thought out, and every detail, no matter how realistic it seemed to Ella, always had some flaw that Guster was able to point out; something that made it not-real. It was kind of like the Divergent fear simulations, but less... you know, scary. *whispers* This isn't real...
And speaking of Guster. Oh. My. Sparks. Circuts, he's amazing. He's exactly who/what Ella needed to get through Nexis, since even though her dad was the one who designed it, she doesn't know a lot about the actual game (just the coding). Also, he's gorgeous- (view spoiler)
(view spoiler)
I am very excited to see where this story is going to go in book two, REDUX. I really want to find out what happens with Ellani and Guster and Quentin, and if they make it to Cadence. I really hope we get some kind of flash-back with Ellani's parents, the Cyrs, and Simon. (view spoiler)
Also, I sense an IRL love triangle. Who's side are you on?
Thanks for reading! x Jamie
UPDATE: I just got an autographed copy from Barnes & Noble today!!!</["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]></["br"]>
