Morning Star by Pierce Brown
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book was so intense that I was almost afraid to start reading it. This series altogether has caused me so much stress over time jumps, battles, faked deaths, and whether to say 'gorydamn' or 'bloodydamn.' This one was no exception; it was worse than the others.
And by worse, I mean absolutely brilliant. I could not have asked for a better dystopian series than this- and the scope of the worldbuilding never ceases to amaze me. Pierce Brown, I don't know how you did it, but I'm so incredibly thankful. Hats off to you, my goodman. *applause*
First off, a warning to any of my followers/friends who haven’t read this book. If you are fifteen or older, I’d say read it immediately. Why haven’t you? If you are fourteen or younger, I suggest you wait. You might think, Well, I’ve read this and this and this so violence doesn’t scare me it’s no big deal, but this book was like The Hunger Games, Endgame, and Lord of the Flies squished together into one very graphic adventure, which is a great combo, but not necessarily the best for anyone under fifteen or sixteen. And it’s not just violence- though there is a shitload of that. I’m not even going to get started on how many times Sevro swears in one sentence, let alone throughout this whole trilogy. There are also a lot of inappropriate references that younger readers don’t really need in their lives, plus some more intimate scenes. Seriously, don’t ruin a great book for yourself by reading it too early. The whole scope of this series is so large that if you don’t know the vocabulary- which there is a lot of, especially the highLingo- you miss out on a good portion of the story.
Now that that is out of the way, I can get more into the actual review. IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THIS WHOLE SERIES, GET OUT SOON. THERE WILL BE SPOILERS, AND YOU DON’T WANT TO RUIN THIS AMAZING SERIES FOR YOURSELF.
Non-spoilery things you need to know:
-This series is a dystopian set in a very-advanced version of our solar system. It is ruled by the Sovereign.
-The Society is very much a strict, caste-based Roman type. Darrow- our main character- is a Red, at the very bottom of the system, which is ruled by the god-like Golds.
-You should read it. Like, now. Why haven’t you yet??
OKAY GET OUT SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON I’LL HURT Y’ALL IF YOU KEEP READING AND YOU HAVEN’T READ THIS SERIES YET YOU’RE RUINING IT FOR YOURSELVES
Okay, here we go!!! (view spoiler)
Cons: as for things I didn’t like in this book… there weren’t many. But there were some grammatical mistakes that I had to go back and reread while adding my own commas and periods. Some sentences that didn’t make sense. But overall it was very well put together, and the story flowed. I enjoyed it!
I recommend this book to anyone over 15, as long as they’ve read the first two books. It’s a great series, and I cannot wait for the IRON GOLD trilogy starting in 2017! I will definitely be reading that as soon as it comes out. Read on, my friends!
